The Ministry
The Ministry is the administrator of the German-speaking Community (DG). It prepares and enacts the government’s decisions.
Responsibilities
The Ministry carries out the day-to-day business of the DG. Around 180 staff members in three departments maintain close contact with citizens. From their offices the foundations for government decisions are prepared and, once a decision is reached, these administrators see to its application in the field.
A central Ministry task is the drawing up of documents pertaining to the budget debate in parliament. The administration also monitors current expenditure.
Customer-oriented service
In 2003 the Ministry moved into its new building opposite the government, inaugurating a reform of the administration towards its new role of client-oriented service. The five departments are now together under one roof, giving citizens a “one-stop-shop” for their questions, concerns and interests.
The responsibilities of the government’s ministerial cabinets are now tailored to match the same 5-departmental structure. This leads to more efficient cooperation between the cabinets and the departments that service them. While ministers and their cabinets attend to the political form and realisation of their decisions, the administration guarantees their practical application and long-term relevance.
