Burg Reuland: the Our Valley is our valley
Burg-Reuland is the most southerly district authority in the DG and borders on Luxemburg and Germany. The "Europa" monument at the "three countries triangle" (Dreiländereck) in Ouren is the favourite spot of both visitors and locals.
The might of the Reuländer
Reuland's "Burg" offers breathtaking views of the village itself and the surrounding valley. The castle, which was already a fortification in Roman times, was converted in the time of the Franks into a royal residence, where Charlemagne himself is said to have lived for a while.
The castle has been destroyed and rebuilt, extended and renovated several times. The keep is oldest proof still in existence of the former might of the Lords of Reuland. The castle ruins have been protected as a listed monument since 1900.
Jug smashing
At the jug smashing ceremony during the annual village fair, or "Kirmes", each village chooses its King. The jug is placed on a barrel and in turn the village lads, blindfolded, try to smash it with a stick. The one who successfully destroys the jug becomes king and is allowed to choose his "jug-queen" from among the beauties present.
